Montgomery Schools Take Stand Against Enterovirus

Montgomery Public School officials are taking steps to prevent a virus that’s sweeping the country from taking hold here.

Schools got an early cleaning today in preparation for the enterovirus.

The virus has put hundreds of kids across the country in the hospital.

The Alabama Department of  Public Health has now confirmed several cases in the Mobile County area.

Instead of children learning, classrooms across montgomery county were filled with cleaning products.

Custodial staff wiped down every desk in every school.

Students were out for a professional development day, so the school system wanted to get a jump start defending against the enterovirus.

“Normally we wait till the beginning of the flu season to start our sanitation procedures but we’re moving that up a little bit. We’re concerned that with this virus being so rampant in our area we want to make sure that all the common areas of our schools are clean,” said Mona Davis with the school system.

The virus looks a lot like a cold, giving many infected a bad cough.

Dr. Jefferson Underwood says children are particularly at risk because their immune systems aren’t developed enough to fight the virus.

He says parents need to take precautions.

“They need to be concerned, but not overly worried. Usually when you say not to worry that’s when they freak out. But for the most part what you need to do is use universal hygiene precautions,” said Dr. Underwood.

And those hygiene measures can be seen in almost every classroom.

Hand sanitizer and soap are some of the materials students are asked to bring.

But for every hand that misses a wash, the school system says their chemicals will do the job.

“These chemicals will take care of any virus that is out in the school system. Like you said, the bus system, the classroom, the bathroom, these products will take care of it,” said Renard Jenkins who works at Carver Elementary.
