Detective Testifies in Desmonte Leonard Trial

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) – Testimony in the trial of a man accused in a fatal triple shooting continued with a detective discussing evidence that was collected from the scene.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports (http://bit.ly/1vvaFki ) Auburn police detective Jude Hackett told the court Wednesday that authorities gathered several shell casings, a blood sample and broken beer bottles from the scene of the shooting along with a handgun found near the apartment complex where the shooting happened.

Two Auburn football players and another man were killed in the June 2012 incident.

Desmonte Leonard of Montgomery is charged with capital murder and says he fired in self-defense. Prosecutors have said Leonard and others fled the scene of the shooting and discarded the gun.

Three men who were injured in the shooting but survived have already testified.
