Dusty Trails Horse Rescue Needs Donations To Keep Horses Alive

We have an exclusive story for you tonight — a horse rescue center in Montgomery County needs your help. There’s not enough hay in supply for this winter and doantions are so low, leaders say there’s no money left in the bank to buy the next batch.

Dusty Trails horse rescue in Montgomery County helps horses get nursed back to health after being abused. He’s just one of 34 horses here, but there’s only enough hay to last them two more weeks.

As the weather cools off, there’s not so good news for these guys here at Dusty Trails Horse Rescue. It’s facing it’s biggest financial crisis.

“We have another delivery coming in about an hour which is going to bring us to a total of 15 rolls, which is going to be enough for two weeks,” Said Monika Orendorf, President of DTHR.

It’s all the hay they’ll have left for the next 7seven months. As of now, there’s no money left in the bank to buy more — Monika Orendorf, President of DTHR says this year, they’ve received the least amount of donations ever since the rescue opened 10 years ago.

She says if they don’t get enough money, they’ll have to make drastic measures to feed the horses.

“I would hate to think about putting animals down, but all I can say is we’re doing whatever we need to do to keep this up and going,” Said Orendorf.

It’s why she’s started the DTHR Hay Fundraiser on the organization’s website www.dustytrailhorserescue.org — where people can donate as much or as little as they can. The goal by April is to raise $12,000. Orendorf says waiting for help isn’t easy.

“We’ve had over 120 horses come through the rescue over the years and it is very scary the feeling of not knowing where the next hay bell is going to be coming,” Said Orendorf.

The $1,500 a month is just what goes into hay. There are still ferrier and vet expenses, which totals out to about $30,000 a year.
