A Montgomery police officer is in critical condition after a shooting at the Eastern Boulevard Walmart.

A Montgomery police spokesperson says the officer, identified as Officer Hubbard, was shot around 8:30 Sunday morning while attempting to apprehend a person suspected of stealing from the store.

That suspect has been identified as Matthew Lawrencereno Wright.  Police say Wright is 31 years old, 6’1″ and weighs 224 pounds.

They say Wright produced a weapon and fired, striking the officer.  Police say Wright then fled the scene after car-jacking a vehicle.

They say he was wearing a white or gray t-shirt or sweatshirt, and a black knit cap with white lettering. The stolen vehicle is described as a gray Chrysler 300, with Alabama license plate THEQNB.  The vehicle was last seen heading east on the Eastern Boulevard toward I-85.

Police say the Wright is considered extremely dangerous and should not be approached.  If you see either the Wright or the vehicle, call 911 immediately.

Officials say Officer Hubbard is in stable condition and undergoing surgery.
