Officer recovering after weekend shooting

Montgormery, AL –Officer Robert Hubbard is now in stable condition and out of the ICU. He was shot Sunday at the Walmart on Eastern Boulevard.

Meanwhile, the suspect in the shooting is in police custody in Louisiana, according to Montgomery Police and the LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Wright is accused of shooting the officer inside a WalMart on Eastern Boulevard in Montgomery. Public Safety Director Chris Murphy says Wright shot Hubbard in the store, then fled, carjacking a vehicle in the parking lot.

According to Louisiana officials, police in Ferriday spotted the vehicle Sunday afternoon, prompting a chase through multiple parishes.

LaSalle Sheriff Scott Franklin says Wright made it through Concordia and Catahoula Parishes, but was stopped at a road block in Texacotown. Franklin says Wright tried to run over an officer, but police fired several shots, preventing Wright from escaping and damaging the stolen vehicle.

Franklin says Wright then jumped out off the vehicle, then carjacked another car from a woman who was in the vehicle from a short period of time before jumping out.

Franklin says Wright then crashed the vehicle on US 84, then continued on foot. The Sheriff’s Office bloodhound tracked him down a short time later, hiding in the woods, according to officials there.

Wright was apparently shot during the chase, according to LaSalle Sheriff’s officials. He was taken to a hospital there for treatment. Montgomery authorities say they hope to extradite Wright back to Alabama to face multiple felony charges.
