Closing arguments in Desmonte Leonard trial

Closing arguments have been presented in the capital murder trial of Desmonte Leonard…The triple murder case in Auburn will now be going to the jury.

Leonard is on trial for the shooting deaths of three people, including two former Auburn University football players.
Prosecutors are calling for the death penalty.

Monday, the jury heard closing arguments. The prosecution tried to convince the jury leonard acted with the intent to kill. They also defined some of the charges the jury will have to consider.
The defense said Leonard acted in self defense that night in 2012 when shots rang out at a pool party. Leonard himself took the stand last week to say the same thing.
While Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, Leonard could be convicted on a lesser charge.

During testimony, prosecutors played surveillance video…of the shooting for jurors to see.
It showed people scattering as shots were fired, then two men falling to the ground.
But you can’t see the shooter’s face.

After the shootings in 2012, authorities launched a three-day manhunt that led them to a Montgomery home for a nightlong standoff, but Leonard wasn’t inside. He later turned himself in.
We will keep you updated on jury deliberations.
