No political debates this election season?

Voters will head to the polls on November 4th to vote for governor, attorney general and other state and local offices.
Voters we talked to say they would like to see debates between the candidates.

“I think it would be very helpful to hear the different candidates opinions on issues and that would help the voter decide,” said Ann Gray.

“I think it makes the debate interesting and gives us more of an incite to why they should be elected. And I feel if they don’t have any type of competition or debating, then its like why are we rooting for you?” said Christian Kelley.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Parker Griffith says he wants to debate the Governor.
But political analyst Steve Flowers says the Governor has a reason not to debate.

“If you’re an incumbent and a popular incumbent, and you are way ahead in the polls, you debate someone, you’re going to lose ground. So his campaign handlers are telling him not to do it and that’s the reason,” said Flowers.

But he says that doesn’t mean there aren’t big differences in the candidates.

“The Medicaid issue. The lottery issue. Several other issues are in stark contrast as what you do with state government in the next four years,” said Flowers.

Flowers says this year isn’t a big election year in that many incumbents are running again. And without debates, voters will most likely have to find other ways to research the candidates.
