Mourners Gather to Remember Paul Hubbert

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Friends and relatives gathered in Montgomery to remember former teacher lobbyist Paul Hubbert.

Hubbert died Tuesday at the age of 78. An Alabama Education Association spokeswoman has said Hubbert was hospitalized Oct. 6 after a fall and his condition worsened.

The Montgomery Advertiser reported (http://on.mgmadv.com/1vyakQc ) mourners, including former AEA secretary Joe Reed, gathered Saturday at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre. Reed talked about how hard he and Hubbert worked in 1969 to merge the all-white AEA with the Alabama State Teachers Association, a black teacher’s group.

Hubbert led the Alabama Education Association from 1969 until his retirement in 2011 due to health problems. During his tenure, Hubbert became a powerful fixture in state politics and was referred to by some as “Alabama’s other governor.”
