It’s time now to recognize outstanding teachers for all they do in our local schools. This year’s first Golden Apple Award winner, Tanya Boone, teaches kindergarten and special needs students at Coosada Elementary School in Elmore County.

Tanya Boone is a fixture at Coosada Elementary School. She says she never questioned her choice to be a teacher.

“My grandmother was a teacher at the school I attended, my aunt has been a teacher, my mother was in the teaching field as well, so it’s all I know, it’s all I ever wanted to do, was to bring the love of education to the children here in the area,” Boone says.

That means not stopping when the final bell rings.

“She does programs after school, she tutors. I mean, anything she thinks the kids need, she’s going to do. You don’t have to ask her, parents don’t have to ask her, she jumps in does it, gets it done,” said Principal Jina Sanders.

Fellow teachers say Tanya Boone has a gift for reaching students with special needs, and she’s known for never giving up on a child.

“I believe you can always do more. When you have the attitude you can do more, your children will be successful, and these children can learn. Every single one of them, so I just want them to know whatever they do, they can be successful if they try and give 100 percent,” says Boone.

Boone has been teaching kindergarten for ten years and says she stays at Coosada Elementary because she loves the students, the community, and her fellow teachers.
