Could Hubbard Indictment Impact Other Races?

Just two weeks before the general election, Speaker of the Alabama House Mike Hubbard is indicted on 23 ethics violations.

He’s calling it a political witch hunt.

Could Hubbard’s indictment make waves and affect other races across the state?

Speaker Mike Hubbard was surrounded by support as he vowed to fight the corruption charges raised against him.

The room was made up of a lot of lawmakers, and political analyst Steve Flowers was surprised to see such a strong show.

“I thought there was a large number of legislators there showing their support and of course Mike Rogers was very vocal, the congressman from over there. It was a little bit surprising, it was,” said Flowers.

He says even with a Democratic challenger, he expects Hubbard to keep his seat as a lawmaker.

With so many Republicans voicing their support and the speaker’s team pointing the finger at Attorney General Luther Strange, could we see this impact other races?

“None of the other state wide races will have an affect. Governor Bentley has an insurmountable lead, the other constitutional offices have very minimal opposition. So I don’t see it having any affect on statewide races. Now how it affects the attorney general’s race is yet to be seen. That’s the only close race we have in the state,” Flowers said.

With Democrat Joe Hubbard taking on incumbent Luther Strange, Flowers says both could either take a hit or benefit from the Mike Hubbard case.

“The people who follow politics closely who are allied with Mike Hubbard are mad at Luther Strange and will vote against him probably. However, the average voter who doesn’t follow politics as astutely as some of the politicos do see the name Hubbard and it hurts Joe Hubbard, the democratic nominee.”
