MPD officer resigns after DUI arrest

The Montgomery Police Department has accepted the resignation of a police officer following his arrest early this morning for driving under the influence. MPD charged Conroy Cottrell, 28, with DUI after responding to a motor vehicle crash shortly before midnight, Oct. 21, in which Cottrell‘s vehicle, a 2012 Mazda 6 sedan, struck a 2012 Nissan Altima stopped at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Sylvest Drive. After conducting a field sobriety test, officers charged Cottrell at the scene before transporting him to the Montgomery City Jail. There were no injuries in either vehicle as a result of the crash. “Impaired driving is unacceptable conduct that places the public‘s safety at risk,” said Acting Police Chief John Brown. “For a sworn officer of the law, it is intolerable and inconsistent with the standards of MPD.” Cottrell had been a police officer for less than a year. His resignation is effectively immediately.
