Georgia Man Pleads to ID Theft in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A Georgia man has pleaded guilty in Alabama to conspiracy to file false tax returns and aggravated identity theft.

U.S. Attorney George Beck says 33-year-old Robert Bernard Walker of Columbus entered the plea in federal court in Montgomery. Walker admitted working with co-defendants to use sham tax businesses to obtain federal tax filing numbers and then getting fraudulent tax refunds.

Walker awaits sentencing Feb. 5. He could get up to 10 years in prison for conspiracy, and he faces a mandatory sentence of two years for identity theft. Two other defendants – one from Columbus and the other from Phenix City, Alabama – have been indicted and are awaiting trial.
