Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery is being rebranded.
School officials are working to bring  pride and school spirit back to the historic facility, after years of high administrative turnover… among other problems.

Lanier High School has a new theme…’Reclaiming the Castle.’ Faculty, parents and students are trying to get school pride back into these walls.

“It means to get everyone else involved and being as enthusiastic as everybody else is about Sidney Lanier High School,” says sophomore Azaria Perry.

It’s been a rough couple of years for Lanier, as first year principal Antonio Williams explains.

“We had high turnover in administration and there were several rumors about closing the school, so I definitely think that impacted our student body.”

But now, Williams says the school is on a much better path.

“Our numbers are increasing. Our test scores, students are doing fairly decent. Discipline is down. So we are making a lot of strides, a lot of improvement.”

School officials say parents play a pivotal role in reclaiming the castle, by getting and staying involved. Montgomery County School Board member Robert Porterfield says he believes this is the start of something new for Lanier.

“As I turn and look around and see all of these people that are out here this evening, I think this is a good start and I believe it will grow from here.”

As do the students..

“You can’t go to school and be enthusiastic about learning and not have pride,” says Perry.

School officials announced the opening of a parent center, where parents can go to do basic office work like sending faxes or making copies. The center will be open to parents Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 to 2. It is located inside of the school.
