Student Athlete Charged in Stabbing at Field House

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) – A 16-year-old Athens High School football player faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after police say an 18-year-old teammate was hurt in a knife attack in the team locker room.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said fellow football players subdued the younger boy and were able to wrestle the weapon — a pocketknife — from him Tuesday afternoon inside the athletic field house.

The News Courier reports that the injured student was taken by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police said he was wounded in his abdomen area.

Authorities have said the injured boy was an 18-year-old senior. Officials identified the suspect as a 16-year-old junior, also a football player.

Johnson said the investigation indicates that the dispute might be over a stolen item.
