Securities Commission Warns Against Ebola Scams

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Alabama Securities Commission is warning people to be on guard against investment schemes related to Ebola.

Commission Director Joe Borg says con artists try to make a quick score during times of fear or uncertainty. He says investors should be cautious about any unsolicited investment opportunities related to Ebola, particularly those received through the Internet.

The North American Securities Administrators Association says about 1,000 Internet domains using the word Ebola have been registered since July. Most of the domain names have no content yet on the Internet, but the association says more than 180 of them appear suspicious.

Borg says people can contact the Alabama Securities Commission in Montgomery to determine if an investment and the promoter of an investment are licensed and registered.
