Troy University Campus Kitchen Fighting Hunger

A dining hall at a university feeds thousands of students everyday. But still, a lot of that food goes to waste.
Now Troy University is part of a national project hoping to change that. The university is the latest to partner with the D.C. based Campus Kitchens Project. The non-profit works with schools across the country on ways to cut back on wasted food.
University volunteers will distribute the extra food to children in the Head Start program feeding about 60 families in Troy a week.
Jonathan Cellon, coordinator service learning & civic engagement said, “Well balanced fruits and vegetables proteins things of that nature. And the parents when they come and pick them up on Friday will take that with them and go home with them.”
About a dozen student volunteers will prepare the take home meals every week. They’re all certified in how to safely handle food.
Since it’s leftover food being distributed, the university says it won’t have any additional expenses to run the program. But the Greek system raised about $3,500 dollars during last Greek Week to cover any additional costs.
