B-17 Flying Fortress’s Stop in Montgomery

Today was the last day of the B-17 Flying Fortress’s stop in Montgomery. The Experimental Aircraft Association worked to bring the aircraft to the river region, and the 70-year-old plane is one of the new existing B-17’s left. Visitors had the chance to watch history come alive by climbing abored the aircraft. Some lucky few even got a chance to fly it.

There were several veterans in attendance, some of whom had flown the airplane. Stan Tew, the president of the local Experimental Aircraft Association, said, “It’s hard for me to imagine what it was like to spend 8 to 12 hours in there, but I wanted to get in it and ride it to try and visualize what those young men did, how difficult it was to do it, and how brave they were to do what they did.”

The B-17 Flying Fortress is landing in St. Simons Island, Georgia next, with tours running November 7-9.
