“Veteran’s Place” Homeless Center Broken Into

An exclusive story from Montgomery — a transitional home that helps homeless veterans is now a victim of a crime. Someone broke into the home, stealing several items and leaving a mess behind. Wanda Kraemer is the founder of Veteran’s Place, an organization that houses homeless veterans. Kraemer got the news on Monday, while she was out of town, that the organization had received its non-profit status. But that good news followed with some bad news when she returned to Montgomery. Every window at Veteran’s Place is now boarded up. Tree limbs that reach the home are being removed. While the home is being fixed up to house up to 12 homeless veterans by late next year, that’s not why all the work is being done. Founder, Wanda Kraemer, is taking extra precautions hoping they will keep burglars from coming back. “They broke this window and that’s where they came from,” Said Kraemer. The window is next to the fence, which faces Court Street. “You see there’s all that glass in there.” Not just several windows. She says even one of the entryways in the back of the home was broken into. Kitchen cabinets were crushed to pieces. But that’s not all they did… “They stole coats, blankets, sheets, underwear,” Said Kraemer. They were all donated items collected to help get homeless veterans back on their feet. Add up the stolen items with the damages left, Kraemer says the organization is now out at least $2,000. She says she’s disappointed by whoever did this… “Our veterans, the ones that honor us and keep us safe, they need to be honored after all they did,” Said Kraemer. Now, the transitional home will take longer to open up. “It is kind of sad. Really very sad that that happened,” Said Kraemer. Montgomery Police are still on the search for whomever broke into this home. Kraemer says if those who broke in would’ve just asked for the items, she would have gladly given things to them.
