Property Deed Mailing Solicitation Seen In Pike Co.

A heads up to home owners in Pike County, some residents are getting what appears to be a bill for a property deed.
Home owners are asked to pay $83 for records you can get for free.
This type of solicitation may not be illegal, but Troy Police are warning people to read notices like this carefully to know what you are buying.
Troy Police Lt. Bryan Weed said, “It almost looks like a bill,” complete will the homeowner’s name, address, specifics on their home and a fee amount. Eighty-three dollars for your deed and property assessment. But if you flip it over- the disclaimer that you don’t need to pay.
The documents promised are public records that you can get yourself on the internet or at the county courthouse.
It may sound like a scam, but Troy police say what this California company is doing is not technically illegal because it’s up to you to read this carefully.
Lt. Bryan Weed said, “They document in there several times that you can get these records at your local courthouse or different agencies…that they are public record. That it doesn’t cost anything but they also say you have to go in person. They are trying to get people to say well we can save you time.”
You can also search any service like this one, with the better business bureau to see where your moneys going.
The better business bureau gave this company- Record Transfer Services an F. The bureau’s website says Indiana’s Attorney General has a pending lawsuit against this company and two others for allegedly misleading mailers.
