Boothe Wins District 89 by 84 Votes

It’s one of the closest races in the state. Joel Lee Williams and Alan Boothe were only separated by 95 votes on Election Night.

Today the provisional ballots were counted and Alabama News Network is the only station there and the first to bring you the results.

It’s been a tight race for Alabama House district 89 between incumbent Alan Boothe and challenger Joel Lee Williams.  And out of 102 provisional ballots cast on Election Day, only 72 counted. Those votes are cast when there’s a question of the voter’s eligibility. They’re also the final factor in this race. There were also two military absentee votes counted Wednesday.

The canvassing board spent two hours counting the votes, but then had to start over.

A question was raised on how to tally straight party voting, so the probate judge said to be on the safe side they’d recount.

In the end 42 votes went to Joel Lee Williams, 30 to Boothe but Williams lead’s not enough to close the gap.

Lance Hyche, Boothe’s campaign manager said, “Based on our calculations and the numbers from Dale County. Rep. Boothe can stake his claim to an 84 vote victory district wide we are excited about that and Rep. Boothe will get on with representing Pike and Dale Counties.”

The results will not be finalized by the probate judge until Friday.

Alabama News Network did speak with Joel Lee Williams on the phone, he said he’s proud he won the home county. Williams said,  “we’re not judged by how many votes you get, but how you go by getting those votes and for that I am proud.”

As for if his campaign will ask for a recount, that’s yet to be determined.
