Incorrect Ballots Given to Some Voters in District 89 Race

Dale County Probate Judge Sharon Michalic confirms that the wrong ballots were given to some voters in the Level Plains precinct in the District 89 race.
This is the race that was too close to call on Election Day between Incumbent Alan Boothe and Joel Lee Williams. After counting the provisionals Wednesday, Boothe’s ahead by 84 votes.Â
A total of 854 ballots were cast at the Level Plains precinct. But, the probate judge confirms that some of those voters should have, and did not, receive the ballot with the District 89 race on it.Â
District 89 cover all of Pike, and a portion of Dale County. The district map makes it appear that Level Plains is split between District 89 and District 93. So the incorrect ballots would have had District 93’s race between Steve Clouse and Jennifer Marsden.Â
The Williams campaign has until December 15th to contest the race. Alabama News Network broke this story and did speak with the Williams campaign. They said they have yet to make a decision on how they will proceed.Â
Here’s a full statement from Williams:
“In America, we take great pride in the sanctity of our elections and the responsibility we have to choose our public officials. It has now been confirmed that hundreds of Dale County voters at the Level Plains Precinct were not allowed to vote for the State House district in which they reside. This is extremely unfortunate given the amount of time I spent getting to know the voters in that community and asking them for their support. There is no doubt in my mind these errors were unintentional because I have confidence in Probate Judge Sharon Michalic and Sheriff Wally Olson. Over the coming days, I will prayerfully consider my options and make the decision I believe is in the best interest of my district.”
