Butler County Schools Recieve New Grant From UAB

One South Alabama school system is receiving a special grant. All in hopes to help more students get more scholarships and go to college.
Butler County School System wants to make sure they improve their students’ chances of getting a post secondary education.
Thats why the school district is receiving the Gear Up Grant. Butler County is one of 20 school districts receiving the seven year 49 million dollar project.
The objective of the grant?
“Look at seventh grade students and follow them all the way hopefully to their first year of college, and increase the number of students who enter college. And who are successful upon entrance of college.” Says Dr. Tera Simmons, Butler County Student Learning Administrative Assistant
This includes giving students opportunities to visit colleges, special classes to help them improve their SAT and ACT scores, And give them the skills needed for college. Dr. Tera Simmons says this is a major deal for students, because many students in the district will be the first in their family to go to college.
Educators and local school officials will start training on December third at Alabama State University.
