This week’s Golden Apple Award takes us to Southside Middle School in Tallassee, and to a school where students say their teacher goes beyond her job description to make a difference in their lives. Tara Battles has spent twelve years teaching. At SMS, she teaches sixth grade English. That’s not all she does, though. In 2014, she became the sponsor of the school’s Drama Club, which had been inactive for some time. With Battles’ help, the school is getting ready to perform its first student play, “The Gingerbread Man,” in December 2014. “I just really love being around children and interacting with the kids, and I just can’t stay away from them.
