Marion Mayor Assaulted, Alleged Attacker Arrested

From the West Alabama Newsroom–   A Marion man is facing an assault charge after he’s arrested for allegedly attacking Marion Mayor Tony Long.

Police Chief Carlton Hogue says 31 year old Lionel Hinton is charged with — Assault on a Public Official. He says Hinton showed up at city hall Tuesday morning — and attacked the mayor in his office.

“Mr. Hinton came to the office, and the officer was coming out of the office, and Mr. Hinton brushed by him and went in,” said Hogue. “And commotion started, loud shouting started, and then my officers kept asking to open the door and he wouldn’t open the door and the officer had to kick the mayor’s door in.”

Hogue says Hinton is the husband of the city clerk — who also works at city hall. He says the cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Hinton is out on bail after posting $50,000 dollars bond.
