The clock is winding down on Larry Blakeney time as head coach. After close to a quarter of a century leading the Troy Trojans, his replacement will have some large shoes to fill.

David Helms said, “man in the 24 years, he’s affected so many people.”

James Kimbrough, who worked at Troy for 30 years said, “I think the world of Larry Blakeney. Fine man.”

Trojan fans who watched his entire career are now eager to see who’s next.

Helms said, “a lot of fun in coaching is getting back to on the field coaching. a lot of big time head coaches they get into stuff that’s not a lot of fun. So sometimes you get those guys that want to come back to the grass roots of it so to speak.”

Big time names like Will Muschamp are popping up in the rumor mill. He’s out as Florida’s head coach at the end of this season and has ties to Alabama. Te was a defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2006- 7.

But over at Troy, some fans think Muschamp’s a long shot.

Clay Yeager, a Troy University Senior said, “I just don’t think Troy can afford a coach like his caliber but you never know he hasn’t been a head coach that long.”

Helms said,  “If we could get a young Coach Blakeney I think that’d be the way to go.”

Kimrbough said, “Knowing the administration at Troy they will look for a good person a solid citizen if you will. Because that’s the type of people the Troy people are.”

A 17 member advisory committee is in place to help with the search. Blakeney’s last game is November 29th. And the athletic director is hoping to have a new coach named towards the beginning of December.
