Williams: Won’t Seek Recount, Contest District 89 Results

We now know the winner of the Alabama District 89 House of Representatives seat.

Joel Lee Williams sat down with Alabama News Network to break the news that he will not ask for a recount or contest the race against incumbent Alan Boothe.

Only 84 votes ultimately separated the two. Alabama News Network also broke the news that some district 89 voters were given the wrong ballots in Dale County on Election Day.

Williams says he’s tried to stay clean and positive the entire campaign. And he wants to continue that way, saying digging into the possible discrepancies is not the way he wanted to win.

Joel Lee Williams said, “To my loyal and passionate supporters I’d tell them it’s time to stand down. It’s time to set these things aside and move beyond the campaign. And now the time I think is for all of us to focus our energies in whatever way we can and however you can to make Alabama a better place for our children.”

A less than one percent margin separated the two candidates. But it was not close enough to trigger an automatic recount.
