From the West Alabama Newsroom–  The holiday shopping season is in full swing — and people in Selma are re-investing in their community by shopping at locally owned small businesses.

Small Business Saturday — was a huge success at Allez-Oup boutique in Selma.

“It was so busy,” said salesperson Becky Youngblood. “It was crowded the whole time. It was chaotic but it was great.”

Community leaders are urging residents to continue to shop at local small businesses as much as possible this holiday shopping season.

Selma resident Velma Brewer says she plans to do all of her holiday shopping locally.

“Selma needs all of the tax dollars and help that they can get,” said Brewer. “If we put more into Selma we would have more.”

Economists say small business drives the economy — and creates more than half of all new private sector jobs.
