Golden Apple: Monica Anderson

This week’s Golden Apple takes us to Alexander City, where we met an eighth grade English teacher who wants to be involved in students’ lives, staying committed to their success and growth, even outside of the classroom.
Monica Anderson has been a teacher for nineteen years. The Alexander City Middle School teacher says she knew she wanted to be in teacher back when she was in school, where she was inspired by great examples.
“I tried to think about what I liked, and the teachers whom I really liked are the ones who tried to make it a little bit more fun,” she says.
Anderson serves as sponsor for several different clubs, including Student Government Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and God’s Girls. Every year, working with Coach Bill Lutz, the FCA hosts a powder puff football tournament, where the girls play football and the boys are cheerleaders. They usually raise about $1,500, money that goes to missions and outreach projects in Alexander City and across the country.
Taliah Hutchison, one of the students who nominated Anderson, says she never doubts that her teacher cares about her and her future.
“Everything makes her special. She’s the best teacher,” Hutchison said.
Monica Anderson says she doesn’t plan to stop teaching any time soon, and she says having great students is a reminder of why she wants to make a difference in their lives.
