Montgomery Academy Student Wins Capitol Hyundai High School “Highsman” Player Of the Year Award

We have a winner! Tonight, the very first Capitol Hyundai High School “Highsman” of the Year trophy (yes, that’s how we’re spelling it) was awarded. Many of you played a big role in the selection process… Every week you guys went on our website to vote for that player of the week, but as for the Player of Year Award, 50,000 votes were cast on our website. All in support eight outstanding players across central and south Alabama. Nominees: – Cedric Barnes with Carver High School – Tyler Sheehan with Macon-East Montgomery Academy – Ryan Bottoms with Edgewood Academy – MiKell Floyd with Elmore County High School – Josh Thomas with Montgomery Academy – Orland Lacy with Opp High School – Eric Graham with Autauga Academy – Mike McKenney with Carver High School The winner: Josh Thomas. “It’s just such a blessing. I can’t believe just how much support I got. And the votes came down to me and I just feel so blessed right now to be the first High School Highsman winner for Channel 8 [Alabama News Network] and it’s just a blessing,” Said Thomas. The quarterback from Montgomery Academy not only received a trophy. Capitol Hyundai also awarded him with a $2,500 scholarship. “We’ve got great traditional football and young men playing the game so we though we would do something that would be in honor of those young men and their outstanding achievements,” Said Brandon Mosley, General Manager with Capitol Hyundai. Sports Director, Mo Carter, emceed the event. Former Alabama State University football coach, Reggie Barlow was tonight’s speaker. Alabama News Network General Manager Jesse Greer says 50,000 votes makes all the players winners. “High School football is a tremendous thing around here, obviously, but I don’t think it gets enough exposure… or for the kids to get the exposure that they should get in awards so we tried to come up with something that they would be proud of,” Said Jesse Grear, General Manager of Alabama News Network.attending Middle Tennessee State or Southern Mississippi when he graduates this May. As for the future — winner, Josh Thomas, says he has his eye on attending Middle Tennessee State or Southern Miss when he graduates this May. The Capitol Hyundai High School Highsman Player of the Year is the start of a tradition for Alabama News Network..
