Dexter Avenue Hosts Capital City Christmas Parade

Another Capital City Christmas Parade is in the books. Despite the rain, hundreds of spectators came out to watch floats make their way down Dexter Avenue.
Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange began the parade, which started at the front of the Capitol. Although rain came down on and off throughout the evening, spectators didn’t let that stop them from coming to enjoy the festivities.
“He wanted to see the parade today so we were out here rain or shine,” says Latoya Clay.
Hundreds stood outside with umbrellas and in rain gear eager to catch a glimpse of the themed floats. Alabama News Network partners with the Salvation Army to ‘Do the Most Good’ and our float reflected that. But there were a slew of other fun themes as well.
“We’re with Sam’s Club and we’re one of the sponsors of the parade,” says Jeff Young. “Our Christmas theme this year for the float is ugly Christmas sweaters.”
Though some were more interested in what was being thrown from those floats.
“I like the part where they throw the candy and the necklaces,” one child told us.
Several bands marched in the parade, playing classic holiday tunes.
Larry and Jetaun Knight say they enjoy the family friendly event each year.
“We wanted to bring our kids out so we could just enjoy the Christmas spirit here in Montgomery, Alabama,” Larry says. “It’s a beautiful thing.”
There was a ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” protest that lasted about 4 minutes during the parade. The protestors briefly stopped the procession when they laid in the street to make their point.
