Wetumpka’s Tammy Moseley training for Montgomery Marathon

The Montgomery marathon, half marathon and 5k are in March and Alabama News Network is the exclusive media sponsor.
We’re following the inspiring story of one local woman who’s overcome adversity and health issues to run in the race.

For those who don’t know, a marathon is 26.2 miles. That’s a lot of running and it takes a certain kind of person to be able to complete that race. Someone who is determined but also very disciplined.

Three years ago Tammy Moseley of Wetumpka was 220 pounds..

“I also was a smoker and I smoked for a little over 14 years and I put those down,” she explains.

After quitting cold turkey, Moseley started running to lose weight. First just around the neighborhood but she eventually worked her way up to running 5ks, inspiring friends and co-workers along the way. And it was one of those co-workers who nominated Moseley for a contest called “My Marathon Story.”

“And I think it may have been a week later that I had received a phone call that they had chosen me”

As the winner of the contest, Moseley was given a running coach, a training plan, and new running shoes. She has already started her training, running anywhere between 3 and 12 miles a day.

“We choose different routes and we’ll do some challenging routes where we’ll run up some hills or we’ll run all flat so that we have a day of what we call rest and it’s a lot of fellowship too because we do a lot of talking.”

One of those talking with Moseley is Lynn Bius, a co-worker, friend, and more experienced runner.

“She’s great,” Bius says of Moseley. “We’ve known each other for a while so we tell lots of stories and if we’re tired, we push each other through it and yell at each other.”

Bius has already run in four prior marathons and will run with Moseley in march.

“If you can commit to the training and getting up, then you’ve got it,” she says.

Moseley is committed. She runs in Millbrook each morning around 5AM and for her the biggest challenge is not physical, it’s mental.

“Not letting me tear myself apart because I do a lot of that…’what are you thinking’… ‘what makes you thnk you can do this?’

Regardless of some negative thoughts here and there, Moseley says it’s the support of family and friends that’s keeping her going and a vision of crossing the finish line.

“It would be quite an accomplishment, a very, very proud moment for me, something that I never thought that I could do,” she says.

We plan on following Moseley throughout this journey so stay with Alabama News Network for more updates.
