Gas Prices Drop, AAA Sees Increase In Travelers

If you plan on hitting the road this weekend, the good news is your wallet will have a little more cash as gas prices continue to drop. The national average to fill up your gas tank is $2.25 per gallon. In Montgomery, you’ll find places like the Raceway gas station on Eastern Boulevard well under that. Mix that in with one of the busiest holiday periods of the year and AAA says that could be a reason for the 4 percent increase in drivers hitting the road compared to last year. AAA estimates nearly 99 million people traveling 50 miles or more in the US. “We’re spending a lot less money at the gas station from day to day, week to week and that gives us more money to spend on other things whether it’s food, shopping, entertainment, whatever it might be, it gives us all a little breathing room,” Said AAA spokesperson, Clay Ingram. It’s a lot of breathing room for Montgomery resident, Marvin Richards, who has a diesel truck. “You feel a little better when you have to go somewhere versus like you’re hesitant about going somewhere. But now it just makes you feel a little more comfortable about you having to go to places to do different things,” Said Richards. Richards says this time last year he was spending more than $100 dollars to fill up his truck. Now he’s spending no more than $75. AAA expects those gas prices to drop through February. The holiday travel season ends on Monday.
