Construction along Dexter Avenue is making a big impact.
It’s the last leg of the Selma to Montgomery march, and some are already impressed with the changes.
“The cleanness of it! When I was a kid, you would go downtown and you’re going to see wine bottle here, beer bottle there,” said Carlos Hill.
“I like the changes. I work in downtown montgomery so I’m right in the middle of it. It looks really nice It’s a really good upgrade,” said Tara Blackman.
Part of the Selma movie was filmed on location on the very street where the march happened 50 years ago.
The Dexter Avenue renovations alone cost 8 million dollars, with the money coming from state and federal grants.
Mayor Todd Strange says the money has been there, just waiting for a project like this.
“The world is going to be watching us, a lot of people that come, and we’d like to make sure that it is a celebration of the progress that we’ve made with the understanding that we want to use this as a springboard for that future,” said Mayor Strange.
It’s not only the facelift. There have been campaigns create sculptures and add them along the route.
While there’s still plenty left to do, the mayor is confident things will be ready ahead of the march.
“What we’ve tried to do is coordinate the myriad of activities of all these organizations that want to have their own celebration or their own interpretation. There’s going to be a big meeting towards the end of the month at the county where we’re going to bring all of the groups together,” said Strange.
