A woman believed to be the oldest living person in Alabama passes away and Saturday family and friends gathered to remember her.

Abbie Grayson lived to be 110 years old. And in all those years, her faith is one thing she’ll be remembered for.

Her family said she was the same on Sunday as she was every other day of the week. And Saturday a memorial service was held at her life-long church, Hilliard Chapel AME Zion Church.

In her century she witnessed, she was a part of change. Her family says she was a spiritual advisor for Dr. Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement.

Earl C. Grayson Jr. , he oldest grandson said, “Trust God for yourself. If I could say anything she taught me how to depend on Christ. She taught me how to honor the father, and how to allow them to be my life. Not be apart of my life, but embrace them and allow them to direct my life. And I think that’s the main thing I got from my grandmother.”

So what’s her secret to long, fulfilled life? Her son son says, “she served people, she served God first, and she drank a little bourbon on the side.”

Grayson graduated from Tuskegee University in 1922, she was the oldest living alumni.
