The first ever Montgomery Marathon is just around the corner in March and Alabama News Network is the exclusive television sponsor.
Each month, we’ll be profiling those associated with the race.
Today, we’re highlighting Avery Ainsworth, who owns Feet Fleet Sports in Montgomery and is helping local runners achieve their goals.
Avery Ainsworth opened Fleet Feet Sports 15 months ago. Since then, the running specialty store has become pretty well-known for its active wear and its shoe wall.
“We measure your foot twice,” he explained. “Once, we do it seated then we do it standing and after that we watch your walk. All of those times, we’re watching to see how your foot changes and what it does once you get in motion.”
Whether you’re a beginner or a professional runner, there’s something at Fleet Feet Sports for you. Now, the store is seeing a lot of traction because of the upcoming marathon.
“That’s our main goal, to get anybody and everybody out doing stuff,” Ainsworth said. “The elite people, they know what they’re doing but we want to teach people really how to get started.”
And if anybody knows a thing about running, it’s Ainsworth, who won the Montgomery Half Marathon last year. That’s right, he came in first.
“Running is in my family. My dad was a good runner. My brother is a good runner so we’ve all grown up running.”
And he says anybody can be a runner, they just need to start.
“The biggest thing is you’ve got to start slow and you’ve got to build your mileage up easy. You can’t just go say I’m going to go run a marathon and go run a marathon, it doesn’t work like that.”
Avery Ainsworth has been meeting with the Montgomery Marathon coordinators in an attempt to help make the race successful. He also does a lot of charity work through Fleet Feet Sports, just last week they donated over 300 shoes to those in need.
