From the West Alabama Newsroom– The ‘Selma’ movie made its big debut in theaters nationwide this weekend coming in at the number two spot –and now that its showing all over the country — the movie is already having an impact on tourism.
Tourism officials say the movie has sparked a noticeable increase in tourism around town. They say museums, restaurants and hotels are working to make the most out of the new surge in the number of tourists.
“I think with it being the 50th anniversary we were already expecting to have a huge influx of people this year but with the movie it just kind of increases that because there are people that are watching the movie and hearing about Selma that wouldn’t have before,” Selma-Dallas Co. Tourism Director Ashley Mason.
The movie’s release kicks off a year-long celebration in Selma — commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Selma Voting Rights Movement.
