Troy University is now the first in the state to offer a unique law school program. It’s a partnership between the law schools at Faulkner and Samford Universities with Troy, to give students an accelerated path to their careers.

Jonathan Jenkins is one of the lucky ones who’s known what he’s wanted to be, before stepping foot on the Troy University campus.

Jonathan Jenkins, a Troy University Sophomore said, “I’ve wanted to be a lawyer since I was a kid. I mean that’s been my goal my entire life.”

He’s the first student expressing interest in a new partnership to get him to his goal, faster.

Jonathan said, “after I sat down and looked at it I was like ‘why would you not?’ this is just a great thing.” He’s talking about a new partnership between Troy, and the Jones School of Law at Faulkner and the Cumberland School at Samford.

Dr. Jim Rinehart, Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences said, “they actually had approached us.” Dr. Rinehart says students will take three years of general studies at Troy then move on to one of the partnering law schools if accepted. Cutting out a full year of study.

Dr. Rinehart said, “The cost of going to law school is quite expensive. To be able to shorten that expense by one year and one year’s cost is very helpful to those who want to pursue it.”

But he says cutting costs doesn’t mean cutting corners. “This will in no way reduce the academic rigor of the social science baccalaureate that these students will ultimately receive. It just allows them to pursue their ultimate professional goals more quickly,” he said.

A jump start that Jonathan’s hoping to take advantage of. “I’ll have an undergraduate and a graduate in 6 years so I think it’s really exciting that I’ll be able to do that. Speed up the process and get into the work force,” he said.

Troy is one of only about 20 schools in the country with this type of accelerated law curriculum. The partnership officially launches in the fall, but students are already taking the necessary courses. And students like Jonathan are already studying for the LSAT to get a high enough score to be accepted into the law schools.
