The parents stepped out of the house when their home suddenly went up in flames with three children inside. Neighbors came to the rescue.

“We tried. We tried, … It happened so quick. It happened so quick,” said neighbor Jerdericka Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick and Terrell Hardy recount what happened Thursday night when a fire broke out across from their home on Alexander Street.

“I picked the cardboard box up. Put the cardboard box on my head, couldn’t even see,” said Hardy.

Hardy went in the burning home calling for his two year old goddaughter. He was able to coax her out.

“It was fire all up on the ceiling. It was falling from the ceiling. It was scaring me. I couldn’t even walk in because it was scaring me. That baby walked through all that. I see through the window. Only thing on my mind is she done came half way. This baby wanted to live. I can’t just let her stay right there,” said Hardy.

Hardy says he grabbed her and brought her to safety.
Unfortunately, the three year old and one month old died in the flames.

“I managed to get one out. I couldn’t get the rest. One was asleep and she left one in the carriage. So I say they both died peacefully,” said Hardy.

The two year old is in Birmingham in critical condition.

The fire was determined to be accidental. It is being listed as caused by combustible materials left too close to a heating source. According to Chief Petrey of Montgomery Fire Department said there was a toaster oven found in a bedroom, however this was determined not to be the bedroom that the children were found in.
