A State Rep Wants Public School Student Permitted to Express Their Religious Beliefs

A state representative wants public school students to be permitted to express their religious beliefs and he’s pre-filed a bill for that purpose. But at least one group is questioning the need for it.

Representative Mack Butler’s legislation is the first House bill filed for the 2015 Regular Session of the Legislature beginning in March.

It would require school districts to allow students to pray and express religious feelings.

The US Supreme Court struck down school sanctioned prayer and Bible readings in the early 1960s but student-led religious activities are permitted.

Butler introduced the same bill in the 2013 and 2014 legislative sessions but it did not make it to the floor of the House for a vote in either year.

The legislation is one of a dozen bills already filed for the March 3rd session.
