From West Alabama Newsroom– Some people in Selma took to the street Thursday afternoon — to commemorate the role teachers played in the Selma Voting Rights Movement.
Dozens of marchers re-traced the steps of the Teachers March of 1965.
Organizers say teachers encouraged their students to get involved in the movement — then put their words into action.
They say the Teachers March paved the way for all the other marches that followed.
Mae Taylor Richmond took part in the march reenactment.
“I came out in honor of them who gave and sacrificed for us as children so that we could have the right to vote today,” said Richmond. “That’s what the marches were all about, the right to be able to vote for what you believe in and for who you want to be in public office.”
The march kicked off with a rally at Clark Elementary School — and wrapped up with a rally at the Dallas County Courthouse.
