There’s good news in Troy about how many students are making it through high school.

Since the state changed the way they determine the graduation rate a few years ago, Charles Henderson High School’s graduation rates gone up from 58 to 87 percent.

Administrators have been working to keep that number climbing through new initiatives like a mentoring program. Each high schooler is matched up with a teacher.

Teachers have also been encouraged to add more hands on, engaging activities in the classroom.

School leaders have also made it harder to drop out, by making students have to meet with counselors and administrators before a decision is made.

Dr. Boyd English, Principal Charles Henderson High School said, “Students feel like this is home. And if they are moving away from home, they have to talk to their parents. Well here, if they are deciding that they are going to drop out of school, they have to meet with me and I get to sit down with them and talk to them about the consequences of making that decision.”

Administrators say keeping a close eye on the records of students who are on the dropout list has also helped the dropout rate go down.

They noticed that students who moved during their four years were on that list, even if they received there degree outside of Troy.
