From the West Alabama Newsroom– Controversy continues to swirl around President Obama’s visit to Selma — and some of the events planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Movement.
Organizers of the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee some of the events being planned are an effort to diminish the Bloody Sunday march in Selma.
State Senator Hank Sanders says President Obama visiting Selma on Saturday — instead of Sunday — is a part of that effort.
“We wanted the president to know, please come but Bloody Sunday march is sacred and it will go on,” said Sanders. “It wasn’t Bloody Saturday, it wasn’t Bloody March the 7th. It was Bloody Monday. It was Bloody Sunday.”
According to the White House — President Obama will visit Selma on March 7th — which is the exact date of the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march.
