Controversy Is Brewing Over Obama’s Visit to Selma

Controversy is brewing over President Obama’s visit to Selma — and some of the events planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Movement.

Organizers of the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee say some of the events being planned are an effort to diminish the Bloody Sunday march in Selma. State Senator Hank Sanders says President Obama visiting Selma on Saturday — instead of Sunday — is a part of that effort.

“We wanted the president to know, please come but Bloody Sunday march is sacred and it will go on…It wasn’t Bloody Saturday, it wasn’t Bloody March the 7th. It was Bloody Monday. It was Bloody Sunday.” Says Sen. Hank Sanders

“We’re hoping that we can come together and make sure that we have a unified march cause we got a unified enemy against our voting rights and we have to stick together.” says Faya Rose Toure.

According to the White House — President Obama will visit Selma on March 7th — which is the exact date of the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march.
