The City of Tallassee could soon be getting a major upgrade to its recreation facilities.
This week, the parks board unveiled plans for a new $11 million building.
It would include a 500-seat gymnasium, modern weight rooms, an indoor pool, and an outdoor pool large enough to host swim team meets.
The City Council could vote on raising sales tax by one cent to 10 cents on the dollar to cover the costs, although that has not been decided yet.
Supporters of the new facility say it could help the city long-term.
“Not just from a recreational aspect, but we think, where we’re looking for location, it can be the start of development along 229 and Interstate 85. We see this as being part one of eventually commercial growth along that corridor,” said Parks Board Chair Michael Butler.
The parks board is holding another meeting to get community input on the project.
It’s set for next Thursday (2/12) at 6:00 at City Hall.
