The Montgomery chapter of PFLAG, or Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, have regular meetings to help offer the LGBT community support. But in light of what Monday could mean, tonight’s meeting carried a little more weight.
Monday is an important day for the LGBT community in Alabama. With Gay Marriage becoming legal, groups like PFLAG, are stepping in to offer support
“We are about equal rights for everyone,” said Amy Harris, the Director of PFLAG Montgomery. “And our group just happens to focus on LGBT persons as a part of that.”
Harris says that attendance was larger than usual for this meeting, mostly because of the uncertainty Monday could bring.
“So we really just want to be a one stop resource for people to come, ask for support, and ask questions,” Harris said.
Their meetings are held at Emmanuel Prebyterian Church. And despite the negative ideas that have been associated with churches and gay marriage, Harris says some are offering up support of their own.
“Its one of the welcoming churches in our area where people can choose to worship, and have to worry about any retribution from a pastor or a minister, or a congregation that just don’t hapen to see things the way we do,” Harris said.
When Monday morning comes, Harris just hopes that many people show support for those deciding to get married.
“We’re hoping that if pwople aren’t getting married tomorrow if there not at that point at their relationship,” Harris said. “We at least hope to bring people downtown as a show of support.”
