Man Tells Police He Thought Gun was Unloaded

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – Police say a man facing an assault charge after a shooting in Tuscaloosa County told them he didn’t think the gun would fire when he pointed it at another man.

Lt. Gary Hood of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit says 18-year-old Jesse Cook told investigators that he pointed the gun at another man and pulled the trigger but thought the gun was unloaded.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that the shooting happened around 5:30 a.m. Sunday at a home off Hargrove Road East.

Authorities say the 18-year-old man who was shot was treated at DCH Regional Medical Center for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Cook was charged with first-degree assault. He was released from the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $15,000 bond. It wasn’t known whether he has an attorney.
