Perry Co. 50th Events Commemorate Role in Voting Right Movement

From the West Alabama Newsroom–Â People in Perry County played a prominent role in the Voting Rights Movement back in 1965 — and the community has scheduled several events over the next few weeks — to commemorate that history.
  Â
There are a half dozen events planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary — and the area’s role in the historic events that shaped the world.
The idea for a march from Selma to Montgomery — started in Perry County after Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot and killed by a state trooper.
“We decided to in get cars and go from here to Selma in order to march from Selma to Montgomery to let George Wallace know that he had killed one of our citizens here in Perry County,” said Willie Nell Avery.
Perry County activist Albert Turner, Sr. was one of the leaders of the march on Bloody Sunday.
