The city of Montgomery is teaming up with several agencies in the area to meet with property managers from apartment complexes. The hope is it’ll reducing crime and improve quality of life. It’s taken a lot of planning; a lot of leg work for rental alliance leaders to visit apartment complexes in the southeast part of the city. That includes areas near Calmar Drive and Virginia Loop Road.. The group is made up of its neighborhood response team: The police department, the Department of Public Safety, the Clean City Commission, Public Works, BONDS (Building Our Neighborhoods for Development and Success) and the Mayor Todd Strange’s office — they’ve been meeting with property mangers from 12 apartment complexes in the last year. Within the last few weeks, the group has grown. Now, 24 apartment complexes are trying to open the lines of communication. “I think the big thing I’ve seen is the different managers working better together,” Said Clare Watson with the city of Montgomery. Managers, like Beth Whetstone at the Foxcroft Apartment complex, agree with Watson. She’s managed the property since 2009 and has seen the changes. “As far as people hanging out, that has reduced and the police department is patrolling the areas and it seems like the crime has dropped,” Said Whetstone. She’s right. Police say the highest crime area in the southeast district was happening on Calmar drive a year ago –50% of the crime — while police are still developing final numbers, they say it’s no longer the area with the most crime. Clarence Thomas now lives in the Eagle Landing apartment complex because of that. “I guess when I moved here I thought it was going to be a lot of bad but it’s not I mean everybody seems calm over this way. Nobody tries to rob me or nothing,” Said Thomas. The city has also been pushing on the cleanliness of these areas. Property managers say the city most recently put trash dispensers along the sidewalks. RENTAL ALLIANCE APARTMENTS East Precinct Rental Community Role 1. Courtyards at Garden Glenn Apartments 2.
