From the West Alabama Newsroom–  Some Lowndes Co. residents are having trouble getting their trash picked up — and they want county leaders to fix the problem.

Garbage cans at homes on River Road in north Lowndes Co. are piled up high and full of trash.

Al Hite says the trash pick up problems have been going on now for just about two years — and something needs to be done about it.

“We’re two weeks late now plus a day,” said Hite. “We’ve only had it picked up one time since towards the end of January and here it is almost the middle of February — and this is not an uncommon occurrence.”

The Lowndes County Commission has given the company 30 days to fix the problems — or its contract to pick up the trash could be terminated.

Dale Purdie is one of the owners of Purdie & Sons Refuse Service.

“We had a lot of maintenance problems, equipment failure that pushed us behind, but as of now we’re up and rolling, we’re pretty much on schedule and trucks are out picking up as we speak,” said Purdie. “Apologize for the delay.”
