We’re getting a first look at the live oak trees that will be planted on Toomer’s Corner on Valentine’s Day.

The original oaks were removed after Alabama fan Harvey Updyke poisoned them.

“It’s not the same. After every football game, it felt different, so it’s finally going to feel like home again and Auburn will go back to normal. We’re going to have our tradition back,” said Auburn student Emma Sager.

The new trees were handpicked by Auburn officials from a nursery in South Carolina. The trees are 30-feet wide, and were specifically chosen for their similar appearance.

Auburn officials expect thousands of people could turn out to watch the planting of the new trees Saturday.

“Two years ago, when we took the other ones down, people were here more for seeing it and being a part of history, but  I think now, this is something completely different. Everyone seems to be in good spirits. It’s a good day for Auburn, a good day for our fans, and a good day for Toomer’s Corner,” said Mike Clardy, Director of Communications at Auburn.

The planting begins at 8 A.M. Saturday. It’s expected to last between four and six hours. Downtown businesses and restaurants will open early in anticipation of the crowds.
